Launching a Pilot Program to Upcycle Paper Packages (Japan - Pigeon Home Products)

Pigeon Home Products Corporation and Toppan, Inc. are collaborating on a project to upcycle paper packages as part of the city of Fuji’s SDGs Platform Project.

The project will see collection boxes installed at the Pigeon Home Products plant and the Firanse wellness center, both located in Fuji, where consumers can deposit used paper packages from selected Pigeon toiletries, including Pure baby laundry detergent and baby soap. These packages will then be upcycled into notepads, picture books, and other items. (“Upcycling” is when an old product is reborn as a new and different product with new added value.)

Plans call for upcycled products to be distributed to visitors touring the new Pigeon Home Products factory after the company’s move in August, and to participants in events within the city of Fuji.

Paper packages for toiletries cannot be recycled with the same processes and milk cartons and similar packages, but this project will show that these paper packages can be upcycled, and aim to promote recycling activity in general. The results will be verified by surveying consumers who assist in package collection.

Meanwhile, Pigeon will offer school visits to teach about recycling paper packages, hold events where participants can actually experience upcycling paper packages, and explain the systems through which paper resources can be used in a circular fashion, promoting awareness of recycling among consumers.
